First World Cup goal, another point: Cape Verde’s fairytale continues with Uruguay’s draw
Cape Verde is the fairytale story of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The story added a new chapter as the African team scored their first World Cup goal to secure another point against the former world champions with a 2-2 draw against Uruguay. On a day when everyone expected Cape Verde’s defense to be the main attraction, it was actually their attack that earned them a draw.
Kevin Pina gave Cape Verde the lead in the 21st minute before Maxi Araujo and Agustin Canobbio gave Uruguay the initiative just before half-time. But Helio Varela made himself the Cape Verdean hero when he capitalized on a terrible mistake by the Uruguayan defense to score in the 61st minute. Both teams threatened to score the winner in the final 10 minutes, but Cape Verde return home with a valuable point.
