Svastik Samal wrote his name in the history books when he scored a magnificent 212 off 169 balls for Odisha during the Vijay Hazare Trophy encounter against Saurahstra at Alur on Wednedsay, 24 December. Samal became the first Odisha batsman in the history of List A cricket to score a double hundred.
It was also the fifth highest score in VHT history, surpassing the score of 203 set by Yashasvi Jaiswal for Mumbai in 2019 against Jharkhand. Samal’s innings took Odisha to 345 for six in their 50 overs against Saurashtra.
Vijay Hazare Trophy Updates
Samal was part of the IPL 2026 auction along with teammate Rajesh Mohanty but failed to find any buyers. The 25-year-old batsman came in to open the batting for Odisha and got off to a good start before losing Om. Sandeep Pattanaik and Govind Poddar as Odisha stumbled to 59 for three in 11.5 overs.
Samal then had to rebuild the innings alongside skipper Biplab Samantaray, meaning he had to stay till the death. The duo scored 261 off 211 balls with Samantaray reaching his hundred and Samal scoring 156 in the partnership.
Samal fell on the fourth ball of the last over and by then the damage was already done as Odisha got to a high score. Samal’s innings consisted of 21 boundaries and eight sixes. This was his 14th List A appearance for Odisha and he became the 14th Indian player to score a List A double hundred.
