The Mysuru city police is organizing a special anti-drinking drive across the city from December 24 to 30 to curb the cases of drunk driving.
“Commuters are hereby warned that driving under the influence of alcohol is an offense under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The punishment includes a fine of ₹ 10,000 and/or imprisonment up to six months,” said a press statement issued on December 23 by City Police Commissioner Seema Latkar.
“Driving licenses of repeat offenders will be suspended by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) for a period of three months or more, or even permanently, depending on the gravity of the offence. The objectors/objectors may also be dealt with by subsequent penal sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS),” the statement added.
Road safety remains the top priority of the Mysuru City Traffic Police, the statement further said. In addition to normal traffic regulation and enforcement, special drives are conducted to increase commuting safety, reduce road accident deaths, promote traffic discipline and ensure strict compliance with the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 by all vehicles operating in the city.
“One of the most critical issues that needs to be addressed is drunk driving, which poses a serious threat not only to the driver or rider, but also to innocent passengers. Drunk driving significantly increases the risk of traffic accidents and will not be tolerated,” the statement said.
Minors
Minors are also strictly prohibited from driving any motor vehicles. Vehicle owners or guardians who allow minors to drive will be prosecuted under the law, the statement warned.
Vigilant citizens are also requested to report cases of drunk driving and other traffic offenses to the Mysuru City Traffic Police through Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter), Public Eye WhatsApp Number: 9481100100 and Police Line 112.
