
A vaccination camp against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) for cattle will be held in all village panchayats of Kallakurichi district from December 29. The exercise will take place for 21 days.
Officials of the animal husbandry department said that all necessary logistics have been arranged to ensure percentage coverage of the target cattle population of 2.91 lakh population in the district. A total of 57 teams have been formed for special camps to be held at panchayats.
The vaccination event will take place within the framework of the National Program for the Prevention of Animal Diseases.
Each team consisting of Veterinary Assistant Surgeon, Livestock Inspector and Animal Husbandry Assistant will visit each village panchayat on a specific date and vaccinate the animals. A campaign to vaccinate cattle against this viral infection takes place once every six months.
Once infected with the disease, the cattle become unproductive and there is a drastic reduction in milk yield, affecting the livelihood of farmers, the official said, adding that farmers should definitely vaccinate their cattle.
