Several advocates of the Shivamogga bar protested the participation of Justice V Shrishananda of the Karnataka High Court in the program, which will be chaired by former minister KS Eshwarappa, who has several criminal and civil cases pending in various courts.
The advocates wrote to the Chief Justice of India and the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court informing them of the program to be held at Kuvempu Rangamandira in Shivamogga on December 25.
Srigandha, an NGO, and Shivamogga Bar Association jointly organized the seminar. Justice V. Shrishananda will deliver a lecture on “Judicial System in Ancient India”. The program will be presided over by former minister KS Eshwarappa, who is the president of Srigandha. His son KE Kantesh is among the special invitees for the programme. The organizers of the event have put up banners at many places in Shivamogga inviting people to attend the lecture.
In their letters to the Chief Justice of India and the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, the lawyers said that both KS Eshwarappa and KE Kantesh face charges of corruption, amassing assets disproportionate to their known sources of income, provocative statements, hate speech and violation of the electoral code of conduct. Cases filed against them are being heard by various courts, including the Karnataka High Court. They attached a list of cases along with the letter.
KP Sripal, one of the advocates who signed the letters, told The Hindu, “A Supreme Court judge sharing the dais with people facing multiple cases is against the principles of fair and impartial administration of justice. Such an event may cast undue influence on the cases pending against KS Eshwarappa and his son in subordinate courts. We have written to the S. CJI and the High Court Chief Justice, copy and copy justice.”
He wants the CJI and the Supreme Court CJ to take appropriate action with regard to the programme.
