Air India’s Boeing 777, which was flying from Delhi to Mumbai, returned to the capital on Monday, December 22. An airline spokesperson said Mumbai-bound flight AI887 returned to Delhi after take-off due to a “technical issue as per standard operating procedure”.
The plane, with about 335 people on board, was in the air for almost an hour before returning to Delhi. The plane made an emergency landing, the spokeswoman added. “The aircraft has landed safely in Delhi and the passengers and crew have disembarked,” an Air India spokesperson said.
The airline regretted the inconvenience caused by this unforeseen situation.
what exactly happened
Sources told PTI that Air India Delhi-Mumbai flight AI887 returned to the capital after an engine problem was reported in the aircraft.
A source in the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said that the aircraft performed an aerial turn back as the flight crew observed low engine oil pressure on the right engine while retracting the flaps after take-off.
The engine oil pressure has dropped to zero and is being checked, the source said.
The source also noted that a check of previous records did not indicate any abnormality in oil consumption.
According to the airline, the aircraft is undergoing necessary checks and alternative arrangements have been made to ensure passengers reach their destination.
Flight AI887 was operated by a Boeing 777-300 ER and was in the air about an hour after takeoff around 6:30 a.m., according to information available on flight-tracking website Flightradar24.com.
