Supreme Court Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra observed that the judiciary should act as a bridge between law and justice and that judges must uphold values and responsibilities with discipline and sound legal knowledge. Judges must strive for excellence in a competitive environment and constantly improve their knowledge, he added.
Delivering the keynote address at a seminar on ‘Sustaining the Constitutional Vision – Role of the District Judiciary’ held at the AP Judicial Academy, Mangalagiri on Sunday, Justice Mishra said that India has one of the largest judicial systems in the world and that the Constitution of India embodies the best qualities compared to many other constitutions. He emphasized that every aspect of the judicial system must function in accordance with the principles laid down by the Constitution.
He also advised judges to maintain calmness and composure even in difficult situations and emphasized the importance of the district judiciary. He noted that the constitution accords an important place to the district judiciary and the judiciary should recognize the delivery of quality justice as its primary duty.
The common man’s access to justice largely depends on the administration of justice, he said, while calling on the judiciary to ensure that court proceedings are comprehensible to common people to increase public trust and confidence in the justice system.
Further, Justice Mishra said that the conduct of a judge is of utmost importance and clarified that the constitution is not just a legal document and the legislature, judiciary and executive have to function within the constitutional framework. Delivering judgments is not only about settling disputes but delivering justice in a meaningful way, he said, adding that the Constitution covers matters of daily life and urged everyone to apply it fully.
AP High Court (HC) Chief Justice and Chief Patron of the Judicial Academy, Justice Dheeraj Singh Thakur, said that the district judiciary has a vital place in the judicial system and warned against negligence in judicial functioning, adding that it would hamper the proper administration of justice under Articles 14 and 15 of the Constitution.
HC Judge and Judicial Academy Supreme Council Chairman Justice Ravinath Tilhari, Academy Principal Chintalapudi Purushottam Kumar, Chief District Judges and judicial officers from across the state were present.
