The Ernakulam Rural Cyber Police have arrested controversial social media personality Mohammed Nihad, popularly known as ‘Thoppi’, for allegedly posting obscene visuals through streaming platforms. The police registered a case on Saturday (June 20, 2026) night for posting obscene material online, a rural cyber police officer said.

Thoppi allegedly posted nude pictures of his friends on social media after he had an argument with them.

The case was registered on the complaint of lawyer Sreejith Peruman. The lawyer got the police to investigate a series of allegations leveled by members of Thoppi’s group against each other after they recently broke up. The state police chief ordered an investigation into a complaint citing alleged crimes including sexual abuse of minors, drug use and obscenity.

Although the Kochi Cyber Police and the Kalamassery Police had earlier conducted a preliminary investigation into the complaint, they reportedly did not register cases after finding that the alleged offenses did not take place in their jurisdiction. The rural police acted on the complaint as the alleged offense of streaming obscene content took place from Varappuzha where Thoppi was staying, police sources said.

Meanwhile, Mr Perumana claimed that the police had failed to investigate the alleged offences, including sexual abuse of minors and drug use, mentioned in his complaint. In a post on social media, he said he would support the magistrate’s court’s request to amend the FIR by including relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO) and the Narcotic and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS).
