The management of the district has intensified joint inspections with regard to the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations. Specific instructions to strengthen enforcement measures were issued by District Collector N. Devidas at a meeting of heads of departments held at the Kollam Collectorate the other day.
While joint squads of excise department and police will conduct checks to prevent sale and consumption of illegal liquor, drugs and other intoxicants, strike squads and special squads from shooting range and branches are on round the clock to ensure public safety. Border Guard teams will carry out strict checks at border crossings. Joint raids and vehicle checks will be strengthened by the police, excise and forest departments. Directives have also been issued to tighten surveillance at railway stations, parcel offices, families, resorts, houseboats and on the premises of schools and dormitories.
To prevent price gouging and hoarding during the festive season, teams comprising civil supply, legal metrology, food safety and health officials along with tahsildars will carry out inspections. They have been asked to ensure that there are no malpractices like tampering with weighing and measuring equipment, hoarding, black marketing or adulteration of food in commercial establishments and shops. In addition, the Departments of Health, Local Government and Food Safety have been directed to take necessary measures related to public health, food safety and waste management.
Driving while intoxicated
The Regional Transport Office (RTO) has been directed to take strict action against those who violate traffic rules, including drink driving and speeding.
The Forest Department will introduce measures to prevent the production of illegal spirits in forest areas and the smuggling of narcotic substances across forest borders. To increase safety on the beaches during the holidays, more lifeguards will be deployed and the services of civil defense volunteers will be used. Necessary security measures will also be taken at other tourist centers to ensure that the holidays are free from law, order and health issues.
