Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who holds the portfolio of water resources, told the Legislative Council here on Thursday that he would look into the issue of the reported use of Bhima waters by the neighboring state of Maharashtra.
Responding to a question raised in the Council by Member Talawar Sabanna under Article 330, Mr. Shivakumar said that what the member pointed out was a serious issue and he would investigate and get a report on the said use of more than the allotted share of waters by Maharashtra.
Earlier, raising the issue, Mr. Sabanna said that while the allocation of Bhima water under the Bachawat Commission is 95 tmcft for Maharashtra and 15 tmcft for Karnataka, the neighboring state is utilizing nearly 200 tmcft by diverting water to the Sina river through a tunnel.
As a result, farmers of Vijayapura, Yadgir and Kalaburagi districts are facing water shortage, he said and urged the minister to send a team to look into the problem.
