Congress-backed candidates continued their winning streak in the third and final phase of the Gram Panchayat elections for the posts of Sarpanch and ward members.
Elections were peaceful on Wednesday, barring stray incidents of clashes between the ruling Congress and BRS cadres in some districts.
Congress-backed candidates won as many as 6,476 Sarpanch seats, followed by BRS-backed candidates who won 3,347 seats. BJP-backed candidates secured 651 Sarpanch seats, with Independents and others bagging 1,555. Counting of votes will continue late into the night.
The State Election Commission (TGSEC) has announced a total of 12,728 Sarpanch posts and 1,12,242 Ward Members posts. Elections were held in three phases on December 11, 14 and 17. As many as 1,204 sarpanches and 25,551 ward members were unanimously elected in the elections.
The SEC said 85.77% polling was recorded in the third and final phase, with as many as 43.37 million voters exercising their franchise in 31 constituencies out of a total of 50.56 million voters. Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district recorded a high voter turnout of 92.56% followed by 90.68% in Medak district and 89.25% in Suryapet district.
