Palnadu Superintendent of Police (SP) B. Krishna Rao initiated the department against Chilakaluripet Sub-Inspector (SI) Sk. Rahmathulla for alleged dereliction of duty and violation of conduct rules in connection with the recent road accident on NH-16 near Chilakaluripet that claimed the lives of five engineering students.
The accident took place when the accused M Venkat Naidu stopped the truck suddenly on the highway, after which the car carrying the students rammed into the stationary vehicle, resulting in the death of five of the six passengers. Venkat Naidu is the son of Assistant Sub-Inspector M. Srinivas.
According to police officials, the department has initiated a case against the sub-inspector for gross misconduct in the discharge of his official duties after the accident. The charges include failing to inform superior officers of a serious accident, maintaining close association with and allegedly providing assistance to persons involved in criminal activity.
The police further said that the actions of the sub-inspector damaged the police department and eroded public trust. Such conduct amounted to grave misconduct and gross negligence, indecency on the part of a government official, police officials said.
The department’s proceedings allege violation of Rule 3 of the Andhra Pradesh Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 1964. Further action will be taken based on the outcome of the inquiry, officials added.
