India on Sunday strongly rejected Bangladesh’s claims, saying it had never allowed its territory to be used for “activities inimical to the interests of Bangladesh”, and urged the country’s upcoming parliamentary elections to be held in a peaceful atmosphere.
India’s response came hours after Bangladesh’s foreign ministry summoned India’s envoy to Dhaka, Pranay Verma, over statements made by ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who accused her of inciting violence from abroad.
“India categorically rejects the claims of the Interim Government of Bangladesh in its press release dated December 14, 2025. We have consistently reiterated our stand in favor of free, fair, inclusive and credible elections to be held in Bangladesh in a peaceful atmosphere. India has never allowed its territory to be used for activities inimical to the interests of the Bangladeshi people of a friendly government. necessary measures to ensure internal law and order, including for holding peaceful elections,” the MEA said.
What did Bangladesh say?
India’s reaction follows a strong statement by Bangladesh in which Dhaka sought the extradition of Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, accusing them of inciting violence and expressing concern over alleged attempts to disrupt the upcoming elections.
“The Ministry of External Affairs has today summoned the Indian High Commissioner to convey to the Government of India the serious concern of the Government of Bangladesh for allowing the fugitive Sheikh Hasina to continue making inflammatory statements calling on her supporters to engage in terrorist activities in Bangladesh with the aim of disrupting the upcoming parliamentary elections,” Bangladesh’s foreign ministry said in a statement.
“Bangladesh reiterated its call for the expeditious extradition of Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to face the sentences handed down by the judicial authorities in Bangladesh,” it added.
The Bangladesh ministry also alerted the Indian envoy to what it described as anti-Bangladesh activities by fugitive Awami League members currently residing in India. These activities allegedly include planning, organizing and facilitating acts of terrorism within Bangladesh to obstruct the electoral process.
