The Telangana State Waqf Board (TGWB) got relief from the Waqf Tribunal hearing an original application (OA) granting an extension of three months to the UMEED portal. The extension will enable ongoing registration and verification of attached documents uploaded to the platform.
Speaking to The Hindu on Friday, TGWB chairman Syed Azmatuallah Husseini said, “The tribunal has given us an extension of three months. Instructions have also been issued to the Government of India to make the UMEED portal available for further activity.”
Officials said the expansion will allow more waqf institutions to be registered. They said that while waqf institutions notified by the gazette have already been registered on the portal, several others awaiting registration will now be able to complete the process.
In the recent past, two other bodies, TS Sajjadanasheen Mutawalli and Khidmatguzaran Association of Waqfs and Telangana Dargah District Association, which represent hereditary sajjada nasheens who head religious institutions like dargahs, have also filed separate original requests for similar assistance. These applications were returned by the tribunal.
In an earlier order in which the OAs were returned, the tribunal had held that the mutawallis have to enter the details and upload the data on the portal and only they can apply for extension with valid reasons. The Tribunal further observed that the Government of India had notified the Rules in the Gazette on 3rd July this year and held that the period prescribed in Section 3B(1) should be counted from the date of that notification.
