Liverpool manager Arne Slot confirmed on Friday that he is holding fresh talks with Mohamed Salah after the striker’s public display raised fresh questions about his future at Anfield. The situation has escalated over the past week, with Salah openly expressing his frustration at being left out of the squad and suggesting there are forces at the club working against him.
Salah said this last week his relationship with Slot fell apart after dropping three consecutive matches. He added that he felt that “somebody doesn’t want me at the club”. The tension deepened when he was left out of the traveling squad for Liverpool’s Champions League game at Inter Milan on Tuesday. Slot admitted at the time that he did not know if Salah would play for the club again this season.
Ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League meeting with Brighton, Slot said he had opened talks with Salah and hinted there could still be a way back for the Egyptian star. “I’ll have an interview with Mo this morning and the outcome of that interview will determine what the team looks like tomorrow,” Slot told reporters. He added that any further discussion about Salah should take place directly with the player rather than in the media.
Salah’s frustration was made public after he was left as an unused substitute in the 3-3 draw against Leeds. He gave an unscheduled interview outside the stadium in which he said he felt the club had “thrown me under the bus” and that someone wanted him to take the blame for recent poor results.
Slot said the comments came despite several recent discussions with the player and his representatives. He noted that they spoke immediately after the game against Sunderland on December 3 and that all parties have been in regular contact since then.
Salah has scored four league goals in 13 games this season and his struggle for form has coincided with his drop from the starting line-up. He was first dropped against West Ham and later benched again for games at Sunderland and Leeds.
Despite ongoing unrest, Salah remains one of Liverpool’s greatest modern players. He has won two league titles and the Champions League and is the Premier League club’s all-time top goalscorer. He is due to leave for the Africa Cup of Nations next week and recently admitted he doesn’t know what will happen while he is away.
