The Telangana High Court on Thursday directed the Registry to assign a number to a PIL challenging the GO granting Cabinet Minister status to some MLAs and politicians.
A bench of Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice GM Mohiuddin also ordered the Registry to mark a suit filed by BRS leader Erolla Srinivas along with a PIL filed by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, with almost similar allegations in 2017. Revanth Reddy was then an MLA from the Telugu Desam Party.
Both the PILs are likely to be heard soon.
The registry objected to a PIL filed by Erolla Srinivas seeking a direction to stay the GOs issued by the Congress government granting Cabinet Minister status to 14 persons _ K. Keshava Rao, Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, P. Sudarshan Reddy, K. Prem Sagar Rao, G. Chinna Redderhdy, Vem. Ali Shabbir, Harkara Venugopal Rao, Aditya Nath Das, AP Jithender Reddy, Mallu Ravi, K. Srinivas Raju, Prasanna Kumar Suryadevara and K. Penta Reddy.
Appearing for the petitioner, senior counsel Gandra Mohan Rao informed the court that the state government’s decision to post cabinet ministers to such a large number of people is likely to result in massive expenditure without any benefit to the general public. “Interestingly, CM Revanth Reddy, while he was an opposition party MLA in 2017, filed a PIL challenging the then BRS government’s decision to grant Cabinet Minister status to certain individuals,” the senior lawyer said.
The matter was awaiting a decision and became infructuous when the tenure of the then BRS government ended. Leaders question the government’s decisions and take the same decisions on coming to power, the advocate said.
He argued that the current decision of the Congress government is in violation of Article 164 (1A) of the Constitution. Allocating cabinet post to 14 MLAs and politicians in addition to the already existing 16 cabinet ministers was a violation of this article, he argued.
