
Former Union Home Minister and Congress leader Shivraj Patil breathed his last at his ‘Devghar’ residence in Latur, Maharashtra on Friday, December 12. He was 90 years old.
Family sources told PTI that Patil was suffering from an illness.
He is survived by his son Shailesh Patil, daughter-in-law Archana, who is a BJP leader, and two granddaughters.
Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat condoled Patil’s death. He said, “I pray to god to give strength to the bereaved family. Shivraj Patil was a very disciplined leader. He was known for his manners and was widely recognized for his discipline.”
Who was Shivraj Patil?
Shivraj Patil was a Congress leader. Between 2004 and 2008, he served as Union Home Minister.
Patil was also the 10th Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1991 to 1996. He was the Governor of Punjab and also served as the Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh from 2010 to 2015.
Born on October 12, 1935, Patil started his political journey as the head of the Latur Municipal Council and was elected as an MLA in the early 1970s.
He later won the Latur Lok Sabha seat seven times. In the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, he lost to Rupatai Patil Nilangekar of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Patil, known for his dignified demeanour, never indulged in personal attacks either in public speeches or in private conversations, the party chief said.
Patil was also known for his extensive reading, meticulous study and eloquent presentation.
His command of Marathi, English and Hindi along with exceptional understanding of constitutional matters made him a highly regarded MP of his time, the party chief added.
