SC seeks EC’s reply on plea challenging ‘special revision’, and not SIR, in Assam
The Supreme Court on Tuesday (Dec 9, 2025) pointed to special protection laws in place in Assam that deal with the unique needs of the region, while hearing a petition alleging that the Election Commission of India (EC) discriminated against the state by not conducting a special intensive review (SIR) of its electoral rolls despite the alleged presence of “40 to 97 returnees” even among the 197 illegal immigrants.
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant said it will next week hear a petition filed by Mrinal Kumar Choudhury, former president of the Gauhati High Court Bar Association, asking why the revision of electoral rolls in Assam was only through a “special revision” and not the SIR, as is being done in Bihar and other Chhattis states and currently underway in the Union province of Go1. Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep and Puducherry.
