As the flyover construction work at Madhya Kailash Junction is nearing completion, traffic will be diverted for three nights starting Friday for the installation of a tall mast lamp to better illuminate the Sardar Patel Road and Rajiv Gandhi Salai sections.
The diversion, for which permission has been obtained from the traffic police, will be in effect from 11pm to 5am.
The Greater Chennai Corporation will take up the work on behalf of the Roads Department, which has deposited ₹85 crore for the installation of 35 light poles and a tall mast lamp.
Work on installation of light poles and laying of power lines has already started near VHS Hospital, said a source in the Roads Department, which is constructing the L-shaped flyover at a cost of ₹60.68 crore.
About 90% of the work is complete, including 19 spans of the 652-meter-long flyover. Construction is expected to be complete within two weeks, after which other work will begin, including painting and installing signage.
The flyover lighting will be done after the completion of the Sardar Patel Road ramp where the barriers are currently being constructed. Access on the side of the IT highway is almost complete.
G. Murugan, a resident of Taramani, said the condition of the road near IIT-Madras is bad and needs to be fixed as soon as possible.
Sources in the road department said that the road has often sunk due to the presence of old sewer lines and manholes belonging to the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board. If these are not repaired, the road would continue to sink.
