As “Day of Yoga” gains traction on the Internet, it’s time to know when International Day of Yoga (IDY) is. Every year, this day is celebrated worldwide on June 21. Derived from the Sanskrit root yuj, meaning “join”, “yoke” or “unite”, the term “yoga” symbolizes the unity of mind and body, thought and action, restraint and fulfillment, harmony between man and nature, and a holistic approach to health and well-being.

The Government of India will be organizing ‘Yoga Sangam’ or IDY events simultaneously at several locations across India to promote the spirit of unity, health and well-being through yoga. Considered an invaluable gift of the ancient Indian tradition, yoga has become one of the most trusted means of enhancing physical and mental well-being.

The 12th session of International Yoga Day will be led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Kolkata, West Bengal. During this two-day visit to Bengal, apart from participating in the Yoga Day celebrations, he will join the Paschimbanga Divas celebrations and commission three indigenously built naval ships.

International Day of Yoga: History

It was in 1893 that Indian philosopher Swami Vivekananda introduced yoga to the Western world when he addressed the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago, America. Since then, many Eastern gurus and yogis have embarked on a journey to spread yoga around the world and eventually people began to accept it.

The earliest evidence of yoga dates back more than 5,000 years to ancient India. With early roots in the Indus Valley Civilization, the practice is deeply intertwined with Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions.

Meanwhile, the origins of International Yoga Day can be traced back to September 2014, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi first proposed celebrations in honor of the practice while addressing the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). At the 69th session of the UN General Assembly, Prime Minister Modi said, “Yoga is an invaluable gift of our ancient tradition. Yoga embodies the unity of mind and body, thought and action… a holistic approach (that) is valuable for our health and our well-being. Yoga is not just about exercise, it is a way to discover meaning and unity with ourselves, with the world.”

Finally, on December 11, 2014, the UN General Assembly declared June 21 as International Yoga Day.

International Yoga Day: Significance

Over time, yoga has gained worldwide popularity with millions of people practicing it as a means of improving their overall well-being and health in a holistic manner. Yoga not only improves flexibility, strength, balance and endurance, but also reduces stress, anxiety and depression as it combines physical postures, breathing exercises and mediation.

In its resolution, the UN General Assembly said: “Yoga provides a holistic approach to health and well-being in addition to achieving balance among all aspects of life. Wider dissemination of the benefits of practicing yoga would benefit the health of the world’s population.”
