The trend of impressive turnout was visible around midday, as eight municipalities recorded a voter turnout of more than 25% nearly five hours after the polls opened. Voter turnout in Aluva, Kalamassery, Thripunithura and Thrikkakara was over 21% at noon. However, the situation turned around at 15:00, as the voting percentage in 12 municipalities exceeded the 60% mark. Thrikkakara, which recorded the lowest voter turnout in previous elections, had a polling percentage of 58% as of 3.15 pm, according to State Election Commission estimates.
The overall voter turnout witnessed a surge when the numbers were tallied at the close of polling by 6pm. The overall voter turnout across the 13 municipalities was pegged at 79.13%, with five municipalities including North Paravur, Eloor, Maradu, Muvattupuzha and Perumbavoor recording a voter turnout of more than 75%. Muvattupuzha had the highest voter turnout of 79.38% among the 13 municipalities. Thrikkakara failed to buck the trend of low voter turnout compared to other municipalities as the overall voter turnout was pegged at 67.8% at 6:00 pm, however there was a slight increase to 68.58% when the numbers were tallied around 7:45 pm.
Campaign managers on key fronts attributed the decline to the unavailability of many voters because they were either working in other states or abroad. They also recalled that a similar trend prevailed in the elections held in 2020 and 2015. Candidates in these municipalities recalled the general trend that 10-15% of voters are unable to cast their vote due to various factors.
