Former IRS officer booked in property case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case of disproportionate assets against N. Rengaraj, a former Indian Revenue Service (IRS) official who retired as Chief Commissioner of Income Tax.

The allegation is that when Rengaraj was the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax in Coimbatore from 2020-24, he amassed more assets than his known sources of income.

The FIR said that during this period, Mr. Rengaraj built a farm and bought land worth ₹16 million for real estate business.

The total value of assets owned in his name or by his family members was estimated at 23 million rupees, which was disproportionate to his known sources of income.
