The acquittal of actor Dileep by the Ernakulam District and Sessions Court in the actor-rape case is not final, said former Director General of Police B. Sandhya, who oversaw the investigation.
Ms. Sandhya told The Hindu that the court’s verdict was not final. The prosecution could appeal the verdict to two higher courts of justice. Sufficient evidence was presented. If this was not appreciated, it would be possible to approach the higher courts.
There was no doubt that the investigation team had done an honest job in gathering the evidence. According to her, the police had no need to do dishonest work. However, proving criminal conspiracy has always been difficult.
The prosecution, she said, faced many obstacles during the trial in the case. Prosecutors also changed several times.
Asked about former state police chief TP Senkumar’s post on social media that Dileep was framed as an accused without any proper evidence against him, Ms Sandhya said she did not want to respond to anyone’s remarks, especially those who had no role in the case.
As a professional officer, her job was to see if she led her team, if they did the job honestly, and if the evidence gathered was sufficient. In her 35 years with the police, she investigated many cases. In some cases there were convictions. In some, the court did not “value” the evidence due to many factors. Such cases should be handled professionally and carefully. “We should make sure we’ve done our job to the end.
Earlier, she told the media that she hopes the case has also brought about many positive changes in the film industry.
