The city police continue to be plagued by allegations of serious misconduct. In the latest case, the inspector of Bandepalya police station and his staff were accused of kidnapping a 33-year-old cleaning worker from Nepal and later allegedly framed him in a drug case.
According to the complaint, four men allegedly picked up Manoj Thapa, a resident of Vinayaka Nagar, Yelahanka, on the night of December 5. Suspecting foul play, his wife Lakshmi Thapa filed a kidnapping complaint at the Yelahanka police station. During the investigation, the investigators found that Thapa was taken away by the personnel of Bandepalya police station.
After the kidnapping case was registered, the accused policemen allegedly tried to cover up the incident. On December 6, Assistant Sub-Inspector Anaveer allegedly filed a false FIR under the NDPS Act, claiming to have arrested a man selling ganja. Based on his information, the police picked up Manoj Thapa and linked him to the case, he said.
However, Yelahanka police discovered CCTV footage showing a red car accompanying Thapa a day earlier, contradicting Bandepalya’s team’s claims and revealing an alleged cover-up attempt.
M. Narayana, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Electronics City Division), said that an investigation has been initiated and action will be taken based on the findings. Sources said the incident reflects a serious procedural error that violates standard operating procedures laid down for such operations.
Notably, 135 police officers across Bengaluru have been suspended this year for negligence, dereliction of duty or involvement in criminal activities.
