Farmers in Yadgir district have urged the Union government to take immediate action to supply the required quantity of fertilizer to Karnataka to meet the demand in the upcoming kharif season.

Speaking at a press conference in Raichur on May 19, Chamaras Malipatil, Honorary President of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, said that Karnataka Agriculture Minister N. Chaluvarayaswamy had said that the state would face a shortage of 38,000 metric tonnes of fertilizer as the Union government had not supplied fertilizers based on West Asia.

“The minister’s statement on shortage of fertilizers has created concern among farmers and could adversely affect production. Therefore, the Union government should act immediately and supply fertilizers as per the state’s demand,” urged Mr. Malipatil.

He said that the prices of fertilizers and chemicals have increased. He urged the Union and state governments to act together to bring down the prices and also introduce strict measures against illegal sale of fertilisers.

“Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha will launch a protest if its demands are not accepted at the earliest,” he said.

Among those present were Devappa Naik, Mallappa Dinni, Prabhakar Patil, Budayya Swamy and Govind Naik.
