On Monday, December 8, concerns were raised in the Supreme Court over the ongoing issue of IndiGo’s mass cancellations. Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant called it a “serious matter” and acknowledged that the Indian government had taken timely action and taken cognizance of the issue.
A bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi observed that people are stranded at airports and many of them may have health problems, the Bar and Bench said on Monday.
“It is a serious matter. Thousands of people are stranded at airports. We know that… the Government of India has taken timely action and taken cognizance of the problem. We know that people may have health problems etc,” CJI Kant said, according to Bar and Bench.
The Supreme Court commented on this after the list of petitions in this matter was mentioned. The legal counsel reportedly said that there are plenty of vacancies in IndiGo and passengers are suffering due to the ongoing situation.
“Customers are not being informed,” the attorney said.
Plea in Delhi HC
A similar petition was filed in the Delhi High Court on Monday, seeking ground support and refunds to passengers affected by the IndiGo flight crisis.
According to Live Law, the lawyer mentioned the matter before a bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela.
“We have filed a PIL in the IndiGo matter. Several people are stranded. The ground situation at the airports is inhumane. We expect the court to issue orders to IndiGo and ground support for the people stranded at the airport. There is no proper compensation,” the counsel told the Supreme Court on Monday.
Will SC and Delhi HC hear IndiGo matters?
According to the Bar and Bench, the Supreme Court did not immediately order the case to be listed. The objection will probably be made in the routine
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court agreed to list the matter on Wednesday, though it noted that the government had already issued some directions on the matter.
“It will be listed on Wednesday,” said the Bench.
IndiGo crisis
Indigo has been hit several times due to pilot shortages and its failure to implement the new Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL). The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has granted exemption to IndiGo to deal with the ongoing crisis.
However, daily flight cancellations continue at major airports.
