Prakasam, Nellore, Kadapa and Tirupati districts observed the 63rd Home Guard Promotion Day on Saturday (December 6). On this occasion, various events were held to commemorate the services and importance of the Home Guards.
The honorarium for home guards was only ₹2 per day when the scheme was established in 1963; at present it is ₹710 per day, Prakasam Superintendent of Police (SP) V. Harshavardhan Raju said on the occasion.
Talking about the welfare schemes for Home Guards, he said that it was in Andhra Pradesh that the society for Home Guards was first established. It can offer loan up to ₹1000 based on eligibility. Every month ₹50 is collected from each home guard and ₹20 is deposited in the state fund and ₹30 in the district welfare fund. Home guards are also entitled to an emergency relief of ₹5,000.
There are 696 home guards on duty in Praksam district, including 83 women, and they are an integral part of the police department, handling law and order, security, crime control, traffic control, 112, women police stations and disaster management, he said.
Meanwhile, Nellore SP Ajitha Vejendla handed over the home guard appointment order to the wife of T. Suresh, the caretaker, who died due to illness. She later presented certificates of appreciation to 26 home guards for their outstanding service.
