All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen President Asaduddin Owaisi said on Saturday that the demolition of the Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992 marked a “weakening” of the constitution and the rule of law.
Addressing a rally at the party headquarters in Darussalaam, Mr Owaisi said leaders including LK Advani, Murali Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharti had given a written undertaking in the presence of the police that the mosque would remain intact. “Despite this, it was demolished in the presence of the police,” he said.
Touching upon the events of December 22 and 23, 1949, he said miscreants entered the mosque and placed idols there. He said the demolition itself was “outrageous” and a violation of the rule of law, according to the Supreme Court.
Mr. Owaisi said thousands of people gathered at the site on the day of the demolition, but the criminal cases that followed ended in acquittals. He said the BJP government did not appeal against the court’s verdict.
Mr Owaisi, who represents Hyderabad in the Lok Sabha, said the Supreme Court had noted in its judgment that no temple had been demolished for the construction of the mosque. “On December 6, the constitution was weakened and the rule of law was damaged,” he said.
