Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar said on Saturday that a dedicated home guard cooperative society would soon be set up under the city police to promote the welfare of home guards, who he noted perform duties at par with regular staff.
Commissioner Sajjanar announced this during the Home Guards Promotion Day celebrations held at the CAR headquarters in Petlaburji. He viewed the parade, received a guard of honor and addressed the home guards, senior officers and staff. He said there were nearly 5,000 home guards currently working in the city, adding that 2,000 had already signed up to the proposed company, encouraging the remaining staff to join.

He told the assembly that the government was examining the issue of allotment of double houses to eligible home guards. He ordered all staff to ensure that their driving licenses were renewed, saying failure to do so could complicate insurance matters in the event of an accident.
He also warned that strict legal action would follow in cases of negligence, corruption or any illegal activity and urged the home guards to maintain discipline. Certificates were later awarded to personnel who had distinguished themselves in parade and service, and ex gratia checks were given to the families of 18 home guards who had died on duty or from other causes.
DCP CAR Headquarters Rakshita Krishnamurthy, Home Guard Commander NV Kishan Rao and other senior officers were present.
