AUS vs ENG Live Score: Australia strengthened their influence in the second day-night Ashes Test in Brisbane on Friday, moving into a commanding position with a 44-run lead over England. Aggressive opener Jake Weatherald and Steve Smith led the charge as the hosts bowled out England’s first innings 334 to close on day two at 378/6 at a damp, packed Gabba.
With the pitch set to deteriorate over the next few days, Australia’s growing lead could be decisive. They already hold a 1-0 lead in the series after crushing England in Perth over two days.
“It was a crucial last hour for us. Getting to the bottom of the game by six gives us a bit of time in the morning that day,” said Marnus Labuschagne, who shot a smooth 65.
The stumps saw Alex Carey – falling twice, including one off his first ball – unbeaten on 46 alongside Michael Neser (15). England clawed their way back under the lights late on and their pace attack finally came through after an otherwise draining day in the field.
Australia were cruising at 291/3 before Brydon Carse triggered a mini-collapse, removing Cameron Green (45) and Smith (61) in four balls as England’s short-ball plan finally paid off. However, England’s bowlers often lacked control and were let down by dropping four catches.
“We’ve got more work to do but we’re OK in this game,” said England captain Joe Root, who earlier finished with a brilliant 138 not out – his maiden Test century in Australia.
