A grindstone was found in the middle of the railway line near Pachalam Bridge on Friday (December 5), raising public safety concerns.
The stone was spotted by the pilot of the Mysuru-Kochuveli Express when the train was passing the track at 4.50 am. The locomotive pilot alerted the railway police and the personnel reached the spot and immediately removed the stone.
The Ernakulam Town North police have registered a case over the incident and have started an investigation. Police were examining CCTV footage in the area. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Railways Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police sources said residents told them that the grinding stone had been lying near the track for a while. It surfaced after a bushy area along the track was cleared to lay telecom cables, police said.
The police found the carcass of a dog by the track. “There were blood stains on the grinding stone. The investigation will also look into whether the death of the three-month-old dog was related to the incident,” sources said.
