In yet another embarrassment for the Bengaluru city police, a head constable of the cyber crime police station has been accused of stealing ₹11 lakh belonging to a suspect during interrogation at the Bengaluru city police headquarters.
Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh said that an investigation was underway and assured that strict action would be taken.
However, no FIR was registered and the accused police officer was not arrested when last checked on Thursday.
The incident is said to have happened on November 30 and came to light on December 1.
The accused in the cyber crime case, who secured bail recently, was produced for questioning at the city headquarters. When the accused was brought in for questioning, he was said to have about ₹11 lakh in the vehicle.
When he completed the formalities and returned home, he allegedly found the lost cash.
He went and asked the cyber crime police, who checked the CCTV footage and allegedly found constable Zabiullah taking a bag from the car.
Sources said the Central Crime Branch raided his house and recovered some of the money hidden under the bed. He also allegedly bought gold jewelery for his wife and tried to thwart the search as well.
It is the latest in a series of misconduct cases involving police officers in the city. Recently, a constable at Govindapur police station was arrested in an ATM robbery case and two JP Nagar police officers were suspended for allegedly extorting money from a senior citizen.
Bellandur police have also been accused of collecting money from the family in the death case.
