The All India Muslim Personal Law Board on Wednesday said it has sought a meeting with Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian to express concern over technical glitches in the Union government’s UMEED waqf portal.
AIMPLB spokesperson SQR Ilyas cited reports from across the country that the portal was inaccessible, slow and full of errors for those trying to register and upload documents. He stated that the council intends to inform the minister about these issues and request an extension of the deadline.
In a statement released to the media, he explained that mutawallis in several states reported that the portal slowed down, frequently crashed and at times became completely unresponsive, making it nearly impossible to upload thousands of property records within a given time frame.
The council said its secretary general Maulana Muhammad Fazlur Rahim Mujaddidi emailed the minister and noted that although the government had ordered the uploading of all registered waqf properties, technical issues with the portal made compliance difficult.
He added that with more than eight million properties across the country, the timeframe was too short. The board said that if the meeting is allowed, its delegation will include central leadership as well as representatives of major religious and community bodies.
In a separate development, Telangana government officials told The Hindu that when the Supreme Court refused to entertain a batch of petitions through the UMEED portal, the Telangana State Waqf Board and mutawallis of waqf institutions were trying to register and upload documents related to over 33,000 waqf institutions. However, the several thousand unregistered waqf properties existing in the state pose a challenge. They said that if they are not registered on time, then the mutawallis and managing committees of such institutions will have to move the Waqf Tribunal.
