Chief Minister VD Satheesan will present the revised budget for the fiscal 2026-27 in the Kerala Legislative Assembly today (June 19) at 9 am.

The budget will also be the first budget of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government, which came to power in Kerala in May after a landslide victory in the April 9 assembly elections.

Presenting the revised budget for the current fiscal, Mr Satheesan, who also holds the finance portfolio, will be the third Congress chief minister in Kerala – after R Shankar and Oommen Chandy – to present a state budget.

The previous CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) government presented its state budget for 2026-27 on January 29 this year.

Mr. Satheesan faces the challenge of mobilizing additional revenue for development and welfare, especially the UDF’s Indira Guarantee and the ‘Dream Projects’, while addressing the severe fiscal constraints that – according to Mr. Satheesan – his government faces.

The revised budget is presented against the backdrop of the White Paper presented by the Chief Minister in the Assembly on June 4. The document painted a grim picture of the state’s fiscal structure, describing it as “under severe and increasing pressure”.

The previous LDF government presented its state budget for 2026-27 on January 29 this year. Presented by the then finance minister KN Balagopal, the budget projected ₹1,82,972.10 crore as revenue and ₹2,17,558.76 crore as revenue.

Mr. Balagopal recently urged the UDF government not to cut spending on programs announced by the LDF in the upcoming budget.

The general discussion on the revised budget will be held in the council from June 22 to June 24. Discussions and voting on subsidy requests will be held on June 29 and June 30. The subsidy bill will be debated on July 1.
