The pedestrian underpass at Guntur railway station will remain temporarily closed from Friday (June 19) to June 30 to facilitate engineering work to address water seepage caused by excessive groundwater intrusion, the Guntur division of South Coast Railway announced on Thursday.
According to railway officials, the closure will enable expansion of the existing sump and related infrastructure works to improve drainage and prevent waterlogging in the metro, especially during the monsoon season.
The project is part of the Railways’ initiative aimed at increasing the safety of passengers and ensuring continuous usability of the metro. Officials said the increased sump capacity will allow for more efficient collection and pumping of seepage water, thereby reducing passenger inconvenience.
During the closure, passengers were advised to use the available footbridges and other designated crossing facilities in the station area. The Guntur division said adequate signage and public notices would be arranged to guide travelers and minimize disruption.
SCR regretted the temporary inconvenience and sought the cooperation of passengers while essential improvement works are carried out for the safety, accessibility and comfort of passengers.
This was announced by D. Vinay Kanth, Divisional Business Manager, Guntur Division, SCR.
