‘Diesel shortage’ is hurting farmers, water sector and auto drivers in AP, YSRCP claims

YSRCP general secretary and former vice-chairman of the Andhra Pradesh State Agricultural Mission MVS Nagi Reddy claimed that the shortage of diesel in Andhra Pradesh is causing serious hardship to farmers, aquaculture operators and autorickshaw drivers.

He warned that if immediate corrective measures are not taken, the situation may adversely affect the economy of the state.

In a statement on Thursday, Mr. Nagi Reddy claimed that the diesel shortage had entered its fifth day, forcing farmers and transporters to spend hours in queues at petrol stations. He questioned why the problem seems to be acute in Andhra Pradesh despite the presence of a strategic oil depot and refinery in Visakhapatnam.

The YSRCP leader said the shortage has come at a crucial time for the agriculture sector, when paddy fields are being harvested in several districts. According to him, the shortage of diesel has affected the operation of tractors and harvesters, which has caused delays in agricultural activities and increased production costs.

He alleged that some farmers were forced to buy diesel at higher prices through unofficial channels.

Highlighting the impact on the aquaculture industry, Mr. Nagi Reddy said diesel-powered aerators used in shrimp ponds are vital to maintain oxygen levels, especially during power outages. According to him, any disruption to their operations could lead to significant losses for the aquatic animal breeders.

He also claimed that autorickshaw drivers and transporters were facing problems due to lack of fuel, leading to a reduction in earnings. However, the state government insists that steps are being taken to ensure adequate supply of diesel in Andhra Pradesh.
