Malaprabha and Ghataprabha Projects CADA Administrative Officer M. Satish Kumar emphasized the need for farmers in the command area to form water user cooperative societies and actively participate in the participatory irrigation system.
Inaugurating a three-day training program on “Integrated Water Resources Conservation and Management” for farmers of Malaprabha and Ghataprabha command areas at the Water and Soil Management Institute (WALMI) in Dharwad on Saturday, he said that the required training on efficient use of water and soil fertility management was jointly provided by CADA and WALMI and urged the farmers to make full use of the training programme.
He said WALMI offers comprehensive training on modern agricultural technologies, participatory irrigation management, formation and functioning of water user cooperative societies, water assessment and harvesting, irrigation laws and others, supported by demonstrations and field visits. And during the training, the participants will also visit demonstration plots, micro-irrigation units, hydraulic, soil and water testing laboratories, livestock unit, composting unit and rainwater harvesting unit at the WALMI campus, he said.
BY Bandivaddar presiding over the inaugural session said that in an agriculture-dependent country like India, water drawn from reservoirs is invaluable and good yields can be achieved through quality seed, proper land management and judicious use of water. He stressed the need for farmers to grow crops that suit local soil and environmental conditions instead of depending on one or two commercial crops.
Land Development Officer (Cooperation) SS Poojari said that proper distribution of water required close cooperation between farmers and engineers under a participatory irrigation system in which water user cooperatives played a key role. He said companies should independently address water selection, create awareness about water evaluation and ensure that all farmers benefit.
Water Users Cooperative Society President Kumar Timmapur emphasized the need for farmers to be equipped with knowledge on land and water management, mud management, formation and functioning of societies, CADA schemes and others to make farming more viable.
