The Karnataka High Court on Friday barred authorities from felling more trees on land allotted or leased to various public and autonomous institutions for setting up their offices, at Bangalore University’s (BU) Jnana Bharati campus.
Details wanted
The court also directed the authorities to provide details of trees that have already been felled on the plots allotted for construction of buildings.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice CM Poonacha passed the interim order on a PIL filed by Swayam Jagruti Seva Trust, Mudalapalya, Bengaluru.
The bench on November 21 ordered the issue of notices on the petition to the state government and others, including the institutions that are the beneficiaries of the campus land, while adjourning the further hearing to December 9. The bench also directed the government to submit necessary details indicating the decision-making process on whether the concerned authority had examined the necessity of diversion of forest land, which was said to have been reserved for the bio-park by all the institutions.
However, the Petitioner has filed a request for urgent hearing complaining that some trees are already being felled and some trees have been moved from some allotted lands for construction of buildings.
Now, the Bench will hear the petition on December 9 to examine the details to be provided by the government.
