A 35-year-old farmer was found dead at Tavashi near Athani in Belagavi district on Friday.
Another farmer noticed the body of Kantesh Pandu Kumbara in his field and informed his relatives.
Kantesh Kumbar is survived by his wife and three daughters.
The police said he was distraught over his inability to repay loans of around ₹15 crore that he had taken from banks, cooperatives and private individuals.
A case is being registered.
