The Karnataka government on Thursday launched a special package of ₹ 1,033.60 crore as an additional subsidy to compensate farmers for crop losses due to heavy rains and floods this monsoon. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah formally launched the scheme which is expected to benefit 14.24 crore farmers.
As per SDRF norms, an input subsidy of ₹ 1,218.03 crore has already been given to farmers, which would take the total to ₹ 2,251.63 crore. The crop on around 14.58 lakh hectares was damaged and the total crop loss was estimated at around ₹10,748 crore. Following the memorandum from the state government, the center has formed an inter-ministerial team which is expected to visit the state soon.
A note from the chief minister’s office said the additional subsidy was launched to ease the woes of farmers by increasing the compensation from ₹8,500 per hectare to ₹17,000 per hectare in rain-fed area and on irrigated land from ₹17,000 per hectare to ₹25,000,000 per hectare For the area where multiple crops are grown annually, the compensation has increased from ₹22,500 per hectare to ₹31,000 per hectare. Compensation is limited to two hectares.
