Delhi Capitals owner Parth Jindal hinted at the expansion of the Women’s Premier League on Thursday 27 November. On the sidelines of the WPL mega-auction, Jindal said he was quite sure the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) was planning to add at least one more franchise to the tournament.
Asked if the tournament would be better off with a home-and-away format instead of playing in just one or two cities every season, Jindal revealed that the BCCI is likely to expand the league in the near future.
WPL Auction: Live Updates
Jindal said that a home-and-away format instead of a caravan format would be better for the league’s growth, explaining that such a format would also give fans the kind of engagement they want.
“I think we would like to see the WPL home and away and I think this caravan format is fine but not ideal. I hope so and I’m sure the BCCI is working on it. I think the time they get is very short and that’s why the WPL has to fit into that window, but I hope we get a bigger and longer window for the WPL, I think new teams will emerge in one or two future years.” and that’s why I think the cycle is so short when two WPLs are played within 14 months, so I’m pretty sure that BCCI is planning to add a team and maybe with that addition we’ll move to a home and away format, which would be ideal for the fans, for the game and for the growth of the WPL,” Parth Jindal said on the sidelines of the auction.
DC Keep Busy at WPL Auction
The Delhi Capitals were busy from the very start of Thursday’s mega auction. They opened the bidding for World Cup hero Deepti Sharma but were unable to secure her services. UP Warriorz matched Delhi’s value for Deepti at Rs 3.20 crore and managed to keep her in the team.
However, after this minor setback, Delhi Capitals acquired the services of Laura Wolvaardt (Rs 1.10 crore), Chinelle Henry (Rs 1.30 crore), Shree Charani (Rs 1.30 crore) and Sneh Rana (Rs 50 crore) among others to add to the existing group of strong players.
Jindal was asked if the Wolvaardt purchase meant she would succeed Meg Lanning. Jindal replied that DC was very clear that they will have an Indian captain this season.
“We have done our best to get Meg but Wolvaardt will be a good addition and will also bring leadership. The spin department looks very strong with Charani and Sneh. We are clear that we want an Indian player as captain and we have made up our minds,” Jindal said.
Jindal’s words put Jemimah Rodrigues in a strong position to captain next season. Jemimah was in sensational form in the recent ODI World Cup and taking over the captaincy would be a major step in her career if the move goes through.
