The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has started identifying and removing encroachments along stormwater drains in the city to ease traffic congestion, prevent waterlogging and widen roads.
On Tuesday, on the instructions of VMC commissioner Dhyanachandra HM, the town planning staff of the corporation demolished a house, allegedly built without any permission, near Skew Bridge.
In a press release, Mr. Dhyanachandra said that the corporation is focusing on removing encroachments to ensure that there are no obstructions to the flow of drain water and also to deal with water stagnation. He urged the public to refrain from constructing buildings without permission. Any unauthorized structures built by 31 August 2025 must be rectified through a building penalty scheme.
Six families lived in the house, which was demolished on Tuesday, according to the Department of Regional Planning. The families had long since been provided with alternative accommodation, served with notices and given time to vacate, the ministry said. They added that such demolition drives would also be launched near ESI Hospital in Gunadale.
