Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is holding a review meeting on sanitation in welfare hostels in the state on Tuesday
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to make inspection of SC, ST and BC hostels a major responsibility, warning that even minor lapses in sanitation, drinking water or student safety will call for strict action.
In a review meeting on Tuesday, the Chief Minister examined the conditions in welfare hostels and boarding schools and issued a series of firm guidelines to improve living standards.
Stressing the need to maintain complete sanitation and hygiene in all hostels across the state, Mr. Naidu said the incidents reported in recent weeks should not be repeated. He warned that any carelessness or dereliction of duty will not be tolerated. To speed up the improvement, he approved the immediate release of ₹40 crore for the construction of toilets in the remaining 20% hostels where the work was yet to be completed.
He ordered that no hostel should function without proper sanitary facilities and RO aquatic plants. Hostels and boarding schools without RO systems have been instructed to install them on priority. The chief minister also directed the health department to conduct regular medical check-ups and collect blood samples from all the 4.17 lakh hostel students for early detection of health problems and ensure timely treatment.
Emphasizing accountability, Mr. Naidu ordered the establishment of a common command control room for all welfare departments and introduction of digital health records for every student. Officials were instructed to take water samples from each hostel to check for contamination and ensure safe drinking water.
Emphasizing the importance of emotional well-being, the Chief Minister directed that professional counseling be arranged in all hostels, with male counselors assigned to boys’ hostels and female counselors to girls’ hostels. He asked the Panchayat Raj, Municipal Administration, Health and Welfare Departments to coordinate efforts to ensure uninterrupted supply of safe drinking water, especially in hostels in agency areas.
Ministers Dola Bala Veeranjaneyaswamy, Gummadi Sandhyarani and senior officials from various departments attended the review meeting.
