Communist Party of India (CPI) state secretary Binoy Viswam has written to the State Election Commission and the head of the State Forest Corps, urging them to reschedule the tiger census until local polls are over. The tiger population estimation exercise, in which about 3,000 forest officials have been deployed, is scheduled to end on December 8, making it difficult for these officials to return from the deep jungles to cast their votes on December 9, when the first phase of polling is underway.
“The tigers are not going anywhere in a day or two. Therefore, it is logical and in line with the democratic ethos that the census should be postponed,” argued Visvám.
