Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday (Nov 24, 2025) said the elevation of Justice Surya Kant to the post of Chief Justice of India comes at a critical moment for the judiciary and expressed confidence that under his leadership, constitutional values and public confidence in the rule of law would be further strengthened.
Justice Kant, who has been part of several landmark verdicts including the abrogation of Article 370, which stripped Jammu and Kashmir of special status, was sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on Monday (November 24). He was replaced by judge BR Gavaie.
“I express my warm wishes to Justice Surya Kant to be sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India. His elevation marks the beginning of a 14-month tenure at a critical juncture for our judicial system,” Mr. Kharge said on X.
“I am confident that under his leadership, constitutional values, institutional strength and public confidence in the rule of law will be further strengthened, strengthening the promise of justice for every citizen,” the Congress chief said.
President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath to Justice Kant in a brief ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Vice President CP Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were among the leaders who attended the ceremony.
