Yirenkyi arrived at the perfect moment to tap home from close range, sparking wild celebrations among the Black Stars players and supporters.A late strike denied Panama what would have been their first ever World Cup point and ensured Ghana began their campaign with maximum points. The only two game-winning goals scored in the 90th minute or later in the tournament so far both sealed 1-0 victories for the African nations after Amado Diallo’s late winner helped Ivory Coast overcome Ecuador.

Close encounters create few clear cut opportunities

The match was played in rainy conditions at BMO Field and offered little attacking quality for long spells.Panama came closest in the opening minutes when Cecilio Waterman connected with Amir Murillo’s low cross, but Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi made a sharp save. The shot turned out to be the only attempt on goal in the first half. However, Ati-Zigi paid a physical price for his efforts. After enduring several heavy collisions, the goalkeeper was forced off at half-time and replaced by Benjamin Asare. As the game progressed, both teams struggled to break down organized defenses. Ghana enjoyed more possession but Panama found it difficult to unlock while the Central Americans threatened at times on the counter-attack.The match finally came to life after an hour. Thomas-Asante almost created an opener for Jordan Ayew in the 65th minute, only for defender Jiovana Ramos to produce a superb last-ditch effort.

The Black Stars join England at the top of Group L

Ghana entered the tournament without midfielder Thomas Partey, who was denied entry to Canada while awaiting trial on rape charges in England.Despite his absence, the Black Stars found a way to secure all three points. The result leaves Ghana level on points with England, who earlier beat Croatia 4-2, with the Black Stars second in Group L on goal difference. Panama is third, while Croatia is in last place after the opening round of matches.
