India captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati, BCCI will drop him from the squad on Friday. Gill, who was dealing with a spasm in her throat, flew to Mumbai in the morning to consult a specialist for further assessment and treatment of the injury.
The star batsman did not train with the team on Thursday and was scheduled to take a final fitness test on Friday in a late bid to prove his fitness. However, the medical team advised against taking the risk, which led to his withdrawal from the match. Deputy Captain Rishabh Pant will lead the Indian side in Guwahati, starting from November 22.
“Indian captain Shubman Gill, who sustained a neck injury during the first Test against South Africa, has been ruled out of the second Test in Guwahati. Gill sustained a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test and was taken to hospital for a check-up after the day’s play,” the BCCI confirmed in a statement.
“He was kept under observation and released the next day. He traveled to Guwahati on 19 November 2025. Unfortunately, he was not fully fit to feature in the 2nd Test and will head to Mumbai for further assessment of his injury. Rishabh Pant will lead the team in the 2nd Test in Gill’s absence.”
South Africa’s premier fast bowler Kagiso Rabada will miss the upcoming limited-overs series against India and will return home to recover from a rib injury he sustained during training ahead of the ongoing Test series. On the other hand, Anrich Nortje will return to international cricket after 16 months, he has been named in the T20I squad.
India and South Africa will compete in a three-match ODI series from November 30 to December 6followed by a five-match T20I series starting on December 9.
