Andhra Pradesh State Commission for Scheduled Castes Chairman KS Jawahar on Thursday directed the police department to immediately file a First Information Report (FIR) when people approach Station House Officers (SHOs) regarding atrocities on Scheduled Caste people.
He expressed concern over delays in filing cases against accused persons under the SC Act and the ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
In a review meeting with Collector S Ramsundar Reddy, Superintendent of Police AR Damodar and other officials in Vizianagaram, he discussed the implementation of welfare programs meant for Scheduled Castes.
Representatives of several Dalit organizations met him at the Zilla Parishad guest house and explained the grievances of the people.
Praja Sanghala Joint Action Committee (Civil Society Groups JAC) State President Akkivarapu Mohana Rao asked the Commission to look into the socio-economic conditions of scheduled caste people as most of them were living a miserable life in villages. He urged Mr. Jawahar to take the initiative to improve the facilities in the hostels meant for regular caste students. Mr. Mohana Rao asked the Chairman of the Commission to arrange skill development training programs for the youth of Dalit communities to get employment quickly in software companies and other industries.
