Collector Sheik Abdul Rahman on Wednesday released water from the Veedur dam to irrigate 3,200 acres of agricultural land in Villupuram district and the neighboring Union Territory of Puducherry.
According to a statement, the state government has ordered release of water for cultivation of 2,200 acres of agricultural land in 11 villages in Villupuram district and 1,000 acres in five villages in the Union Territory for 2025-26. Water not exceeding 53 cusecs would be released for 135 days from Wednesday.
The current storage level in the reservoir was 475 mcft. The canal system of the reservoir covers 17.6 km, of which 16.3 km passes through Tamil Nadu and 1.3 km through Puducherry.
Former Gingee Minister KS Masthan and Arani Member of Parliament MS Tharaniventhan were present.
