In fresh trouble for Larry Summers, who also resigned from OpenAI’s board over Epstein ties, Harvard University is opening a new investigation into links between its former president and disgraced sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
“The university is conducting a review of information related to individuals at Harvard contained in the newly released Jeffrey Epstein papers to evaluate what actions may be warranted,” a school spokesperson said in a statement.
The Harvard Crimson, the student newspaper and the Boston Globe previously reported on the university’s latest investigation.
An earlier review completed in 2020 found that Epstein visited Harvard’s campus more than 40 times after his conviction for sex crimes in 2008 and was given his own office and unrestricted access to a research center he helped found, the AP reported.
On Tuesday, Larry said he was stepping back from public commitments, and on Wednesday he resigned from OpenAI’s board.
“Larry has decided to step down from the OpenAI board and we respect his decision,” the board said in a statement.
“We value his many contributions and the perspective he brings to the board.”
“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve, excited about the company’s potential, and look forward to watching their progress,” Larry said in a statement.
Summers joined OpenAI’s board in November 2023 as part of an effort to restore stability to the non-profit organization and bring back its CEO Sam Altman after previous board members fired Altman a few days earlier.
Epstein was a convicted sex offender notorious for his dealings with the rich and powerful. He died by suicide in 2019.
On Tuesday, nearly all Republicans in the House of Representatives voted to compel the Justice Department to release its files on sex traffickers.
“We have nothing to hide and it’s time to move on,” Trump wrote on social media late Sunday.
Longtime Trump ally Marjorie Taylor Greene, who pushed for the files to be released before their relationship soured, criticized the president for his long-standing resistance to releasing information gathered in the investigation.
